Test mode: make a test gift without real money
Every new account starts in test mode. Use test card numbers to practice charging, declines, receipts and refunds — no real money moves.
Before you start
- The connection "Test mode (no real charges)" is active (it is, on a new account).
- 1
Check test mode is on
Settings → "Payment processors". "Test mode (no real charges)" has a yellow "test — no real money" badge.
The test connection is marked "test — no real money". - 2
Open the gift form
Press "Record" (top right) → "Gift". Pick a person (yourself) and type an amount, e.g. 18.
Pick a person and type an amount. - 3
Use a test card
With Credit card chosen, a yellow line says "Test mode — no real charge. Use 4242 4242 4242 4242 (approves) or 4000 0000 0000 0002 (declines)." Type 4242 4242 4242 4242, any future date (e.g. 12/30) and any 3 digits.
Test mode shows which card numbers to use. - 4
Press Charge card
Press "Charge card". The gift is saved with a receipt number, just like a real one.
- 5
Try a decline
Do it again with 4000 0000 0000 0002. You see "Card declined (test)". A card ending 0069 shows "Expired card (test)". Now you know what staff will see.
The Charge card button shows the total. - 6
Try a refund
Giving → open the test gift → "Refund / void" → "Refund". It goes back the same way it would for a real gift.
Open a gift to refund it. - 7
Switch to real money
When you're ready, connect your real processor, press "Make default" on it and "Disable" on the test connection.
Tips
- Test gifts count in your totals. Void them when you're done practicing (gift page → "Void (entered by mistake)").
- The giving page and kiosk also take test cards while test mode is the processor they use.
If something isn't working
"Invalid card number (try 4242 4242 4242 4242)".
Test mode only takes real-looking card numbers. Type 4242 4242 4242 4242.
A real donor's card was "approved" but no money arrived.
The giving page was still using test mode. Make your real processor the default and disable test mode. Void the test gift and ask the donor to give again.
