An automation didn't run
Automations only act on things that happen after they're turned on, and only when every condition matches. Go through this list.
- 1
Is it on?
Outreach → "Automations": the badge must say "On", not "Paused".
On or Paused, and how many times it ran. - 2
Did it happen after you turned it on?
Automations never go back in time. A gift from before you saved (or turned it back on) is not handled.
- 3
Do the conditions match?
Check "of $…+" (minimum amount), the campaign, and "tagged …" shown under its name. A gift to another campaign or under the minimum is skipped. A pending gift counts only once it clears.
The conditions are listed under each name. - 4
Wait a few minutes, or Run now
Automations run every few minutes. Press "Run now" to check right away — it says "Ran — … new thing(s) handled".
Check right away. - 5
Look at "Actions that didn't go through"
Failed actions are listed with the reason and "will retry" or "failed after 3 tries".
Each failure, with the reason. - 6
Quietly skipped messages
An email to someone with no email, or who chose "Do not email", is skipped (the same for texts). A reminder-type message to someone over your contact limit is also skipped. Over Shabbos it waits until after havdalah.
- 7
Lapsed and yahrzeit
"Someone hasn't given in a while" catches people when they pass the number of days (at least 30), within the following 30 days. Yahrzeits need a date on the person or a plaque.
Tips
- Each automation acts once per gift, pledge, decline or yahrzeit — never twice.
- Skipped messages (no email, opted out) don't show as failures.
If something isn't working
It ran, but the task went to the wrong person.
Delete the automation and make it again with the right team member (automations can't be edited).
An alert says the server stopped while a message was being sent.
Check the person's messages: it may have gone. It wasn't sent again, on purpose.
Still stuck after all these checks?
